What you see in the sky over Rome
Fiumicino, about 25 km south-west of the centre by the sea, is Italy’s biggest airport and the ITA Airways hub. Its traffic mostly stays over the coast and the western suburbs, so from the centre you usually see planes climbing out or lining up a few thousand metres up.
Ciampino is much closer, about 13 km south-east, near the Appia Antica. It handles low-cost flights, mainly Ryanair and Wizz Air, plus government and business jets, so the south-eastern neighbourhoods see 737s and A320s low overhead.
Rome is also on the main north-south corridor of Italy, so flights between the north, Sicily, Sardinia, Greece and the Middle East cross the sky high above.
Typical traffic
- Fiumicino to Milan Linate, Catania and Palermo
- Fiumicino to New York, North America and Asia
- Ciampino to low-cost destinations across Europe
