What you see in the sky over Tokyo
Haneda, on Tokyo Bay about 15 km south of the centre, is one of the busiest airports in the world. Since 2020, when the wind is from the south, Haneda uses arrival routes over central Tokyo in the afternoon and early evening, so planes pass over Shinjuku, Shibuya and Minato on their way down. At other times most of its traffic stays over the bay.
Narita, about 60 km east in Chiba, handles a lot of long-haul and low-cost traffic, so over Tokyo itself its planes are usually high.
Japan Airlines and ANA both fly large fleets of Boeing 787s and 777s from Haneda, and domestic routes like Tokyo to Sapporo and Fukuoka are among the busiest in the world.
Typical traffic
- Haneda to Sapporo, Fukuoka, Osaka and Okinawa
- Haneda and Narita to Seoul, Taipei, Singapore and Bangkok
- Haneda and Narita to North America and Europe
